Sweets in Saintfield: First Shots of 1798 Rang Out

Saintfield's name is an English rendering of the Irish for 'field of saints', and the town has been shaped by settlers, churches and rebellion ever since.

A town built by the Price family

Before the 1600s, the area around Saintfield was mature oak forest with few settlers; Scots planters began arriving from around 1625, with more English and Scots following after 1641. The town itself was largely created by General Nicholas Price, who bought the land in 1709, encouraged linen manufacturers to settle, and had the road from Belfast to Downpatrick made passable. The three churches that still line Main Street — the Parish Church, First Presbyterian and Catholic Church — were all built within a decade of each other, between 1776 and 1787.

The Battle of Saintfield, 1798

On 9 June 1798, Saintfield was the site of the first major clash of the Irish Rebellion in County Down — a short but bloody confrontation between United Irishmen and government forces that came days before the larger battle at nearby Ballynahinch.
