A second, perpetual Saturday market was confirmed by royal charter in 1315, and in 1361 the bishop's markets were formally restricted to Tuesdays and Saturdays — the same two days the market still runs on today, making it one of the oldest continually trading markets in Britain.
The Market Place itself has shrunk since medieval times. It originally extended from the south side of New Canal down to St Thomas' Church, before infilling with rows of permanent shops — Fish Row, Butcher Row, Oatmeal Row among them — narrowed it down to the square it is today.
