Saltburn-by-the-Sea has been hauling visitors up and down its cliff face by water power since 1884 — one of the more unlikely survivals on the English coast.
A lift built because the cliff walk put people off
After Saltburn Pier opened in 1869, the steep walk down to the beach was found to be deterring visitors, so a wooden "cliff hoist" opened in 1870, lowering up to 20 people at a time in a cage by rope. It was replaced in 1884 by the current water-balanced cliff lift, which is still running today and is believed to be the oldest working funicular of its kind in Britain.
A pier built for pleasure steamers
Saltburn was the first Yorkshire coastal town to build a pleasure pier, with construction approved in 1861 and work starting in 1867. The finished pier opened in May 1869 at 1,500ft long, drawing 50,000 visitors in its first six months, before a storm washed away the pier head in 1875 and it was later shortened by 250 feet.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Saltburn's history runs on water power and Victorian seaside engineering, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of North Yorkshire and the UK.
