Sweets in Saundersfoot: Coal Harbour Turned Seaside Resort

Saundersfoot is a popular Pembrokeshire seaside resort today, but its harbour and the tunnels along its coast path were built for a much dirtier trade.

Built to ship anthracite coal

Coal mining around Saundersfoot dates back as far as the 14th century, but it was the harbour built in 1829 by the Saundersfoot Railway and Harbour Company that turned the village into a thriving coal port, exporting around 30,000 tons of anthracite a year at its peak.

A tramway through tunnels you can still walk

A narrow-gauge tramway built between 1830 and 1834 connected collieries, brickworks and ironworks inland to Saundersfoot Harbour, and remained independent until it closed in 1939. Three short tunnels excavated for the line still survive along the Wales Coast Path near Coppet Hall, walked today by visitors rather than coal wagons.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Saundersfoot's history is built on anthracite coal and a working harbour, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Pembrokeshire and the UK.
