Selby Abbey was founded in 1069 by Benedict of Auxerre, a Benedictine monk who, according to tradition, was directed to the site by a vision of St Germain — just three years after the Battle of Hastings, while the Norman conquest of England was still being consolidated. The abbey grew into a major Benedictine house, and its Norman nave, with its distinctive round arches and thick piers, survives today. Selby Abbey is notable for being one of the relatively small number of England's great monastic churches to escape demolition at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, since it had already become the town's parish church and was allowed to remain standing.
