Sweets in Settle: 73 Miles of Railway, Built by Hand

Settle gave its name to one of Britain's most celebrated railways, a line that was never supposed to be built at all.

A railway born from a Victorian feud

The Midland Railway only pursued the Settle-Carlisle line because rival companies were deliberately delaying its traffic at Ingleton. Construction began in 1869, and the 73-mile route, cut almost entirely by hand through the Pennines, took seven years to finish, opening in 1876.

A line that twice escaped closure

The railway has survived two serious attempts to close it, in the early 1960s and again in the 1980s, both beaten back by local and national outcry. It's now regarded as England's most scenic rail route, while Settle itself grew earlier as a cotton-spinning town around mills such as Bridge End.
