Sherborne Old Castle was built in the early 12th century as a grand fortified palace for Roger, Bishop of Salisbury, and remained an important stronghold for centuries, changing hands between the Crown and the Church before being slighted after a siege in the Civil War. Sir Walter Raleigh acquired the estate in the 1590s and, according to local tradition, fell in love with the old castle's setting but found the medieval building impractical to live in, so he built an entirely new four-storey lodge nearby instead — the Tudor mansion now known as Sherborne Castle, still standing a few hundred yards from the ruins that first drew him there.
