Shifnal, in Shropshire, had a population of around 9,000 at the 2021 census — a market town whose historic centre was almost entirely rebuilt after a single night of fire.
The night the town burned
On 7 July 1591, a fire believed to have started from a maidservant's candle tore through Shifnal, fanned by a fierce storm that carried the flames as far as the parish church, melting its bells. Only the church and the timber-framed Old Idsall House are said to have survived, and Queen Elizabeth I authorised an appeal for funds to help the town rebuild.
What that history doesn't leave behind
This town's history doesn't come with a dedicated sweet shop set up for bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges or halal-friendly lines — not the kind of retail a town this size tends to support locally.
Why Shifnal shoppers order online anyway
For anything past a corner-shop bag, ordering online is more consistent — many Shifnal shoppers would otherwise have to travel into Telford or Wolverhampton for a wider selection.
