Sweets in Silloth: Victorian New Town Built for Ships

Silloth-on-Solway didn't exist in anything like its current form until the 1850s, when it was laid out from scratch as a planned port town to give Carlisle access to the sea — making it one of the few Cumbrian towns built entirely to a Victorian blueprint.

A planned town, built for Carlisle's ships

The Carlisle & Silloth Bay Railway & Dock Co. was established in 1854 to give Carlisle a port for ocean-going ships, building a railway in 1856 and a wet dock between 1857 and 1859. The new town was laid out on a grid plan by 1860, with The Green — a large park — deliberately placed between the seafront and the main area of building.

From port to seaside resort

Promoters soon spotted Silloth's potential as a seaside resort to offset the port's shaky revenues: public baths opened in 1856, followed by a pavilion, cricket ground, golf links and tennis courts. By 1901 the town had 10 hotels and 117 lodging houses. Its name is traced back to the monks of Holme Cultram Abbey, who farmed the land and ran a salt industry here long before the railway arrived.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
