Around 1809, a girl named Mary Ann Brailsford planted an apple pip in a garden on Church Street, Southwell. The tree that grew produced a sharp, excellent cooking apple, and when butcher Matthew Bramley later took over the property, nurseryman Henry Merryweather asked permission to take cuttings — on condition the variety carried Bramley's name. The original tree, though weakened by disease in recent years, still stands and still bears fruit today.
