Sowerby Bridge grew up around a medieval river crossing, but it's the canals that gave the town its lasting shape — and its own small claim to fame as a junction of two separate waterways.
Two canals built within a generation of each other
The Calder and Hebble Navigation reached Sowerby Bridge in 1770, giving the town a direct water link to the industrial towns of West Yorkshire. In 1804, the Rochdale Canal was completed, joining the Calder and Hebble at Sowerby Bridge Wharf and extending the route all the way to Liverpool.
A wharf built for wool, coal and textiles
Sowerby Bridge Wharf was once a bustling goods interchange, handling wool, coal and textiles moving between Yorkshire and Lancashire. The basin has since been restored and now houses cafes, offices and boat hire operators, with the old warehouses still standing above the water.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Sowerby Bridge's history runs on canal trade and an annual rushcart, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of West Yorkshire and the UK.
