St Agnes sits on Cornwall's north coast, and for more than a century its name was synonymous with one thing: the quality of the tin pulled out of its cliffs.
The finest tin in Cornwall
An old Cornish-language saying translates roughly as 'St Agnes tin is the finest tin in Cornwall,' and the area really did produce some of the best tin ore in the world, including 'diamond' tin that needed almost no processing. The village's steep valley sides and cliffs made it unusually well suited to both prospecting and draining the mine workings of groundwater.
A World Heritage mining landscape
At its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries, around 100 mines in and around St Agnes employed some 1,000 miners. Mining ended in the 1920s, but sites like the cliff-top Wheal Coates remain among the most photographed mining ruins in Cornwall, and much of the parish now forms part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.
