Springs that built a spa town
Until then, the site was just four farms: Kinellan, Park, Kinnettas and Ardival. Once the sulphur and chalybeate springs were found and claimed to ease everything from gout to skin conditions, a pump room went up in 1819, followed by a hospital and hotels as visitors arrived to "take the waters."
The most northerly spa in Europe
By the late 19th century Strathpeffer was marketed as the most northerly spa in Europe, and between 1870 and 1939 it was one of the continent's most popular health resorts. The grand Pavilion, built in 1880 to entertain visitors, still stands in the village today.
