Sweets in Tayport: Three Lighthouses Guarding One Crossing

Tayport has guided ships into the Tay for centuries, and the lighthouses built to do the job are still standing along its shore today.

A ferry port since the 12th century

Known historically as Ferry-Port-on-Craig, Tayport's maritime history stretches back to the 12th century, when its ferry carried pilgrims travelling between St Andrews and Arbroath Abbey across the river. It served as the ferry port for Dundee for centuries, with trade only declining after the Tay Rail Bridge opened.

Three lighthouses built to tame one crossing

The white-towered West (High) Lighthouse was built in 1823 by the noted engineer Robert Stevenson and later heightened to 24 metres. It worked alongside a Low Lighthouse until 1848, when the timber-piled Pile Lighthouse replaced it, built to mark the entrance channel and warn ships away from the treacherous sandbanks south of the light.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Tayport's history is built on ferries, lighthouses and the river trade, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Fife and the UK.
