Tewkesbury Abbey was founded in 1087 by Robert Fitzhamon, and its great Norman tower still dominates the town.
A Norman abbey and its tower
Building began in 1102 and the abbey was consecrated in 1121. It is considered one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and its central tower, 148ft high, has been described as probably the largest and finest Romanesque crossing tower in England.
A decisive battle in 1471
On 4 May 1471 the Yorkist army of King Edward IV defeated the Lancastrians just south of the town, one of the most decisive encounters of the Wars of the Roses. Some of the defeated Lancastrians sought sanctuary in the abbey, and the bloodshed that followed closed the building for a month until it could be re-consecrated.
