Sweets in Tranent: Britain's Oldest Coal-Mining Charter

Tranent's history runs deeper than most East Lothian towns — literally. It holds the oldest coal-mining charter in Great Britain, dated 1202-1218, when monks from Newbattle Abbey began mining coal there.

The oldest coal-mining charter in Britain

Coal has been worked at Tranent since the 13th century, when monks from Newbattle Abbey held a charter to mine it — the earliest documented coal-mining charter anywhere in Great Britain, dated 1202-1218.

A battle that once carried the town's name

The Battle of Prestonpans, fought on 21 September 1745, was first known as the Battle of Gladsmuir and then the Battle of Tranent before later settling on its modern name. Part of the fighting crossed the route of the Tranent to Cockenzie Waggonway, opened in 1722 and possibly the first railway in Scotland, which carried coal from Tranent's pits to the salt pans at Cockenzie.
