Walter Rothschild, the eccentric son of the banking family, kept a private menagerie at Tring Park as a young man and built up an enormous collection of preserved animals, birds, reptiles and insects from expeditions around the world. He opened his collection to the public as a museum in the 1890s, and after his death it passed to the Natural History Museum, which still runs it today as the Natural History Museum at Tring — one of the largest collections of taxidermy anywhere in Britain.
