Trowbridge, the county town of Wiltshire, had a parish population of 37,169 at the 2021 census — a town whose weaving history goes back further than almost anywhere else in the county.
A market charter older than most, and a wool trade that outgrew it
Henry de Bohun obtained a market charter for Trowbridge in 1200, the earliest recorded royal market charter in Wiltshire and among the oldest in England, and it was de Bohun who laid out the town's marketplace and built the church of St James alongside his castle. Anglo-Saxon loom weights found in the town show weaving was already happening here up to a thousand years ago, long before the charter made it official.
By the 14th century Trowbridge was a centre for woollen cloth, and by the 17th century it was producing medley cloth, reckoned the finest of its kind anywhere. Production grew so large that the town became known as "the Manchester of the West" — a serious industrial nickname for a town that still holds a well-attended street market every Wednesday.
What eight centuries of market days don't stock
An 800-year-old charter doesn't stretch to bulk confectionery. The Wednesday market and Trowbridge's town-centre shops are built for buying by the bag, not a 3kg bulk bag, a vegan-specific range, or a halal-friendly selection sorted for a trade order.
Why Trowbridge shoppers order online anyway
For anything past a market-day purchase, ordering online and having it delivered is the steadier option — no need to time a trip around Wednesday, and no limit on how much you're buying.
