Turriff grew as the market town for a wide stretch of Aberdeenshire farmland, and its High Street — home to around 4,700 people — has been recognised for it, voted Scotland's Most Beautiful High Street and still filled with independent shops.
The market square
At the north end of the High Street sits Turriff's old market square, marked by a market cross with a 1500s shaft set on an 1865 base, and overlooked by the Fife Arms Hotel, built in 1770. A statue nearby commemorates the Turra Coo, a cow at the centre of a well-known 1913 protest. On the corner of High Street and Main Street, the former Clydesdale Bank building stands out with its Gothic tower and clocks.
What that leaves out
Independent shops built around a farming town's everyday trade aren't generally set up to also carry a dedicated vegan or halal-friendly sweets range, or enough stock for an event or a business — that's a different kind of order than Turriff's high street, however handsome, tends to hold in stock.
