Tywyn is a small Gwynedd coastal town best known for the narrow-gauge railway that starts at its wharf.
Built to carry slate, not passengers
The Talyllyn Railway opened in 1866 to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarry near Abergynolwyn down to Tywyn, where it was transferred onto the mainline for shipping. The 7.25-mile narrow-gauge line still runs along much of that original route today.
The railway that started a movement
In 1951, the Talyllyn Railway became the first railway anywhere in the world to be preserved and operated by volunteers, after commercial slate traffic had ended. That rescue is widely credited with starting the modern heritage railway movement, and the line has run as a tourist attraction ever since.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Tywyn's history runs on narrow-gauge rails, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Gwynedd and the UK.
