Usk has had a castle overlooking the river since the Normans first arrived, and across the centuries that followed it was rebuilt, besieged, and even used to recruit soldiers for a crusade.
Built by Normans, rebuilt by an earl
A timber castle existed at Usk before 1136, when the Welsh lord Morgan ap Owain seized it; it was recovered in 1165 by Richard Strongbow de Clare, who built the stone keep that still stands today. From 1213, William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, refortified the castle with a curtain wall, corner towers and a large round garrison tower.
A castle that recruited crusaders
In March 1188, the Archbishop of Canterbury toured Wales recruiting men for the Third Crusade and is recorded doing so at Usk Castle. The castle was later attacked during the Glyndŵr rising of 1400–1415, and today its ruins are considered among the best-preserved medieval castles in Wales.
