A Market Charter Since Around 1180
Gilbert Basset, keeper of the Honor of Wallingford, granted Uxbridge the right to hold a weekly Thursday market around 1180. For most of the next seven centuries, the town's prosperity ran on that market — it became the main corn market for west Middlesex and south Buckinghamshire, with around thirteen watermills grinding flour along the Colne and Frays rivers.

Its design deliberately restored and incorporated older High Street buildings rather than replacing them. A mile or so away, Brunel University London has brought a steady student population to the town since it opened in 1966, on the site of a former plant nursery.
