Verwood spent centuries as one of Dorset's busiest pottery towns, and the last of its kilns only went cold within living memory.
Dorset's pottery town
Verwood was the county's main pottery-making area, with kilns operating here from medieval times and lead-glazed earthenware produced since the early 1600s across as many as three dozen pottery centres in east Dorset.
The Dorset Owl, and a slow decline
The best-known product was the Dorset Owl, or Costrel, a flask with ear-like lugs used by farm labourers to carry cider or cold tea into the fields. The arrival of the railway in 1866 brought in cheaper imported ware, and the last Verwood pottery didn't close until 1952.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Verwood's history is built on kilns and earthenware, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Dorset and the UK.
