Wallasey's coastal district of New Brighton grew rapidly through the 19th century into a proper Victorian seaside resort for Liverpool day-trippers arriving by ferry, complete with a 600-foot pleasure pier that opened in 1867, with an observation tower, refreshment rooms and its own orchestra. Wallasey Corporation bought the pier in 1928, but it closed in 1977 and was later demolished — the promenade and beach are still there; the pier is not.
A resort like that would once have meant rows of stalls selling seaside rock and sweets by the bag, the classic day-tripper treat. Today's New Brighton and the wider borough have a handful of independent shops, but nothing built for bulk.
