Sweets in Warrenpoint: From Oyster Huts to Victorian Resort

Warrenpoint started life as little more than a cluster of fishermen's huts, and within a century had grown into one of Ulster's favourite seaside resorts.

From Warring's Point to a planned port

Warrenpoint first appears in print in 1744 as 'Warring's Point', described as little more than a couple of houses and huts used by seasonal oyster fishermen. Newry merchants later petitioned the Irish Parliament for funds to build a proper dock at the point, a project costing almost £3,000 and estimated to take two years.

A railway and a resort

A railway connection opened on 9 May 1849, and Warrenpoint grew into a popular Victorian holiday destination, with thousands of visitors arriving each year to take the passenger ferry across to Omeath in County Louth, right up until the railway station closed in January 1965.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Warrenpoint's history is built on oyster fishermen and seaside holidays, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of County Down and the UK.
