From 1922, a red-brick former brewery warehouse on Thynne Street was home to Sela Traditional Sweets, maker of the Sela cough sweet — a humbug-style boiled sweet that became genuinely well known nationally, with demand reportedly outstripping supply during flu outbreaks. For most of the 20th century, West Bromwich had a real claim to a piece of Britain's confectionery history, made on its own streets.
That changed in the 2000s, when the business relocated its production to Newport, South Wales as part of an expansion. The Thynne Street factory was sold at auction in 2007 for £330,000 and later granted planning permission for conversion into housing — the sweets that made the town's name are, today, made somewhere else entirely. The town's High Street has more recently seen its own indoor market rebuilt, replacing the older market at Kings Square.
