Weybridge is where motor racing got its first purpose-built home: Brooklands opened here in 1907 and was the world's first banked racing circuit — a genuine landmark for a Surrey commuter town.
A circuit built in nine months
Brooklands was the idea of Hugh Fortescue Locke King. Work began in 1906, and the outer circuit was built in around nine months by a workforce of 1,500 men. The first official race was held on 6 July 1907, and it predates famous circuits such as Indianapolis and Monza.
From racing track to aircraft factory
Brooklands didn't stop at cars. It became one of Britain's first airfields and, by 1918, the country's largest aircraft manufacturing centre, producing aircraft from the Wellington bomber to the Viscount and VC10 airliners.
