The town planned before America's grid cities
Whitehaven is one of Britain's earliest planned towns, laid out from the 1680s onward by Sir John Lowther in a grid of streets, reputedly inspired by Christopher Wren's designs for rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666. It grew fast: from around 30 households in the early 17th century to over a thousand inhabitants by 1685, and more than 2,000 by 1696, driven by the Lowther family's exploitation of the local coal seams. On the back of that coal — and the ships built to carry it — Whitehaven became, for a time in the mid-18th century, the second busiest port in England after London.
