Oysters landed here were once sent by the barrel-load to London's markets and beyond.
The tradition nearly died out in the 20th century as disease and overfishing hit stocks, but Whitstable's oyster industry has since been revived, and the town now marks its heritage every July with the Whitstable Oyster Festival.
