Wick was once the busiest herring port in Britain: in the 1860s around 1,100 herring boats operated from its harbour, supported by some 650 coopers in the town.
A town planned by Thomas Telford
Pulteneytown, across the river from old Wick, was laid out by civil engineer Thomas Telford for the British Fisheries Society and named after Sir William Pulteney, a former governor of the Society. It is the only fully executed town plan Telford carried out for the Society, and an agreement to begin work on the harbour and new town was signed on 10 March 1803.
Two burghs become one
Wick and Pulteneytown were separate burghs until they merged in 1902. In the 19th century the port was the largest herring fishing port in Europe.
