Three Musketeers: The American Bar Named After a Novel

The name makes Three Musketeers sound like a themed novelty bar, but it's actually one of Mars's oldest products, and the name used to describe the bar itself rather than just a marketing flourish.

A 1932 Mars bar named after Dumas

Mars introduced Three Musketeers in 1932, making it the company's third brand. The name is a direct reference to Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel, and originally that wasn't just a flourish — the bar was genuinely sold as three separate one-ounce pieces, each a different nougat flavour: chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.

Why it's just chocolate now

The three-flavour format didn't survive the 1940s. With wartime rationing and shifting tastes, Mars dropped the strawberry and vanilla nougat and kept only chocolate, and from around 1945 the bar has been sold as a single chocolate-nougat bar rather than a three-piece pack. The filling itself is whipped nougat — traditionally made by whipping sweetened, flavoured egg whites into a light, airy texture before it's shaped and coated in milk chocolate, which is what gives the bar its noticeably lighter bite compared with a denser caramel or fudge filling.

Do we stock it?

No, we don't currently stock Three Musketeers. If it's that whipped-nougat Mars texture you're after, our Milky Way Crispy Rolls use a similar light nougat base, built around biscuit rather than a plain bar, but in the same family of Mars confectionery.
