Haribo was founded by Hans Riegel, registered in the commercial register in Bonn on 13 December 1920 — the name "Haribo" is a syllabic abbreviation of Hans Riegel Bonn. He started out producing sweets from a home kitchen with little more than a sack of sugar, a marble slab and a stove; his wife Gertrud became the company's first employee in 1921. The now-iconic gummy bear followed in 1922, originally called the "Dancing Bear" before evolving into the modern Goldbear.
